Principal's Welcome
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we progress through this term, the ‘busyness’ of life at Assumption is a stark reminder of how schools are the sum of so many moving parts.
Video Newsletter
After this publication, the College is moving from a written newsletter to a video medium. We realise that many families are time-poor, and we believe that a video newsletter will be more easily accessible. We will still look to celebrate life at Assumption as much as we can through our social media pages and our newsletter will complement our online presence by providing a breadth of information and news.
Student Behaviour
As you are already aware we have highlighted some behaviour concerns with a minority of students, and we continue to work with our students to understand that respect is an expected behaviour. While we have seen some improvement, there are still students who continue to challenge our expectations and cause disruption to classes resulting in some students being stood down from representative teams as an example to others. However, such consequences should not be the motivation for respectful behaviour.
To that end, I would encourage your children to not only be always respectful in all their interactions with their peers and staff, but also challenge them to call out instances of disrespect. Ultimately, all we want is a safe and supportive learning environment in which all can grow and thrive.
Saturday Sport
One of the many enjoyable aspects of my role is the opportunity to watch our students represent the College in the AGSV and APS sports competitions. While we do not always win, the competitive and dignified spirit with which we play our games is most pleasing to witness. Even more enjoyable is the opportunity to meet the students’ families who come to support them.
You will already know that, previously, dogs were not allowed on the premises. However, we have amended the policy to allow families to bring dogs, however, the following rules will apply:
- accompany the animal and ensure that it remains under their control at all times (a dog must be on leash that is no longer than 1.5 metres)
- be responsible for the dog whilst the animal is on Assumption College school grounds
- avoid being in or near the Animal Studies precinct (Drusilla and surrounds) or be within other buildings
- be responsible for ensuring that the animal remains hydrated while on Assumption College school grounds; and
- remove all rubbish and waste related to the animal.
We thank you in anticipation of your support.
Upcoming College Production
In two weeks’ time the College will be hosting its annual production on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 May with sessions available at 4.30pm and 7pm. This year the production is based on the movie, Frozen. The staff and students have worked extremely hard spending many hours rehearsing and I am sure that it will be an excellent production showcasing our students at their creative best.
Book your tickets as they are selling fast!
Alumni Events
Last Friday our First XVIII boys football team took on PEGS at Carroll Oval in what was a tough encounter on a crisp, yet sunny Friday afternoon, the team unfortunately went down to a team that played better on the day.
Also present were many College Alumni who accepted the invitation to enjoy an afternoon tea with old classmates whilst supporting our First XVIII.
It is certainly our intention to continue to develop a strong partnership with our Old Collegians so that we can continue to share their story and celebrate the proud history of our great school.
Closing Remarks
In recent weeks there has been extensive coverage of violence against women and on the weekend the AFL paid tribute to the women who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
As a college we are committed to promoting respectful relationships and it was perhaps fitting that John’s Gospel last Sunday focused on Jesus’s greatest commandment, “I have told you so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.” Of course, the love to which Jesus refers is not romantic love, rather, that we show compassion and respect for the dignity of others and in doing so instilling hope in others.
No one should be made to feel unsafe. No one should be belittled or devalued. No one should be the subject of such violence of any kind that causes injury or extreme torment. It is incumbent upon us to teach our young the value of respect, the value of compassion and the value of love. To that end, I urge you to encourage your children to uphold the dignity of others and develop relationships which give hope to the people around them.
Thank you for your continued support.
Paul Finneran
Principal

ANZAC Day Ceremony at Assumption College
On April 24, a solemn atmosphere enveloped Assumption College as students and faculty, gathered to pay tribute to the brave souls who served and sacrificed in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
Our student leaders played a pivotal role in the ceremony, demonstrating a deep understanding of the significance of ANZAC Day. Our College Captains laid a wreath at the foot of the Australian Flag, a solemn tribute to the fallen.
The ceremony concluded with the Last Post echoing across the school grounds, signaling a moment of reflection and remembrance.
On April 25, our students were excellent ambassadors at the ANZAC Day services across our community.
Game Changers Day
All Game Changers students were invited to participate in a Formation Retreat Day on 18 April. This event brought together students from all year levels for a day of reflection, connection, and exploration.
In the Neale Daniher Pavilion, students engaged in various activities cantered around this year's Marist theme, "First Light." This promoted discussion on the significance of connection, faith, and community in their lives.
A highlight of the day for the students was sitting together beneath the pavilion, painting candles to symbolise their “Lights” in their lives. This creative experience allowed each student to acknowledge and appreciate the people who have had a profound impact on their journey.
The day ended for the junior students with a prayer led by the senior students, fostering a sense of leadership, community and reflection. Overall, a really lovely day together!
In the evening, the Year 11 and 12 students engaged in a meaningful sunset reflection session behind the boarding house, and dinner together. This marked a moment of growth for the Hermitage Track students, as they were able to reflect on their journey in the Game Changers program so far.
If you'd like to hear more information about the Game Changers program for your child, you can contact zack.pizzingrilli@assumption.vic.edu.au
Quaere Design and Technology
In a colorful burst of creativity, students dove into the world of polymer clay. Crafting, transforming mundane pieces of clay into vibrant fridge magnets. Guided by their imagination, they embarked on a journey of design and creation, infusing personality into each tiny masterpiece.
Beginning with brainstorming sessions, students explored various themes and concepts, from animals and sports to miniature food replicas.
Armed with sketches and ideas, they then delved into the intricacies of polymer clay manipulation, learning techniques to mold, shape, and blend the clay to bring their visions to life. Each magnet became a canvas for self-expression, reflecting the unique style and flair of its creator. Through the process of designing and crafting their polymer clay magnets, students not only honed their artistic skills but also discovered the joy of transforming simple materials into tangible works of art.
Year 11 Leadership Workshop
On Wednesday the 24 of April, a group of Year 11’s took part in a leadership workshop with Gavin Brown, an old Collegian of Marcellin College a fellow Marist College. As our Year 11’s edge closer to leading our school in their final year, it was a fantastic opportunity for our students to start to think about what leadership means to them, and how they can continue grow and develop in their leadership journey. Gavin drew on his experience in elite sport over the last 37 years to provoke discussion from the students around what it means to be a leader, reflect on where they have seen leadership in their own lives and provide insight into some of the key traits that leaders instil in themselves to impact, motivate and inspire others.
Across the next two terms there will be numerous opportunities for our Year 11 students to explore and hear from a number of experienced leaders from a range of diverse backgrounds and fields. The next workshop will be run by a senior paramedic who has managed critical response teams across a range of complex incidents and events. We look forward with great anticipation to seeing how these opportunities will shape, develop and grow our Year 11’s into the future.

Deputy Principal – Wellbeing
Term 2 Social Justice Fundraiser
This term, we turn our attention to those in our community facing financial hardship, domestic violence, and homelessness. Through the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal, we can raise money and spread awareness about these pressing issues.
The latest census data indicates that more than 30,500 Victorians will be homeless tonight. 23% of all Australians experiencing homelessness are aged from 12 to 24 years, and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children.
These statistics represent real people doing it tough. Every day, Vinnies Victoria’s volunteers provide relief to vulnerable people in times of crisis. Vinnies’ assistance aims to cover the basics and take the pressure off the cost of things like food, petrol, education, utility bills, and medical expenses.
As the nights grow colder and we begin our Winter Appeal for Vinnies, let us commit to making a positive contribution to the lives of those in our community who need it most.

EV Interschool State Championships
The PETSTOCK EV INTERSCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS on April 6 to 10 showcased the vibrant equestrian interschool community in Victoria. Nearly 500 competitors, aged 18 years and under, participated in five disciplines across five days at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers worked tirelessly to orchestrate this monumental event, ensuring its success.
Beyond the competitive spirit, the event aimed to cultivate camaraderie among riders through a diverse array of activities and entertainment. From the lively Welcome Dinner and Karaoke night to the quirky Hobby Horse Championships (well done, Dylan Kenyon), there was something for everyone.
Competition was intense as riders vied for victory, knowing that this event served as a qualifier for the Australian Interschool Nationals. Hosted by Equestrian Queensland in Tamworth later in the year, the Nationals drew ambitious participants eager to secure a coveted spot on the Victorian team. While many riders participated for the sheer experience, there were those with their sights set on representing their state at the national level.
This year, Racing Victoria’s Off the Track program sponsored prizes for the best performed OTTs in each discipline. Congratulations Tamsyn Harvey and Misty Night Combined Training,1st; Show Horse, 2nd and Dressage, 2nd.
