Acting Principal's Welcome – Vaughan Cleary
Staff News
As Kate indicated in the last Newsletter, she is on leave for approximately 7 weeks. Kate is studying a leadership course at Cambridge University in addition to taking a well-deserved break. We welcome back Peter Augustin after his paternity leave and congratulate him and his wife on the safe arrival of a very healthy baby boy (due to start at Assumption in 2035!).
As you may be aware, Assumption College is increasing in size and requiring more and more staff to meet these needs. This, coupled with normal staff turnover, means that Human Resources team is constantly working to ensure the hiring and onboarding of high-quality staff. Whilst there is a significant teacher shortage across the nation, we are pleased to announce that we have a full teacher complement for the start of semester two.
I would like to farewell and thank the following staff who have been great servants of Assumption College but have decided to pursue work elsewhere in semester two; John Perrins, Danielle Rogan, Lachlan Pollock, Catherine Watts and Tegan Barton. We also say good luck to Daniel Di Lorenzo, who is on leave for 12 months as he embarks on some travel and work overseas. We also welcome back Shemalah Anthony and Nicholas Brooke-Anderson from leave.
In addition to the above changes, our Business Manager, Jennifer Dean, has accepted the position of Business Manager at Korowa Girls School. Jennifer's work at Assumption is admired and lauded by many. Throughout the past seven years, Jennifer has ensured the College has maintained a very sound position during the difficult times of COVID. She has also overseen the business needs of our college during times of significant growth, including the numerous building projects required to support our changing circumstances. Jennifer has also led us through one of the most significant times of change in educational finance, governance, compliance and regulatory reporting schedules, which has fundamentally shifted the way the business side of our schools works and responds. As a parent and then an employee, Jennifer has been a tremendous supporter of our College and a friend to many. We wish her all the best.
Co-curricular
Term two is typically one of great energy as the co-curricular program ramps up. The teams competing in the AGSV/APS sports have had a successful start to the winter sports season.
We are proud to have 48 teams compete in the winter season in 2023. These, to the best of our knowledge, are record numbers. It is terrific to see so many students and staff participate in the range of sports on offer. In addition, we have great numbers in Debating, Equestrian and Photography. We thank all staff and students for their participation, endeavour and achievements.
School Production
The 2023 school production was Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. In total, there were three amazing shows across Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings of last week. What a spectacular show! The students and staff worked tirelessly to put on an incredibly professional performance. The combined efforts of all resulted in a highly memorable show that delighted the audience. I would like to share the Principal's note scripted by Kate in the production booklet provided to the audience at the shows.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Senior Production
The curtains have closed on an extraordinary three-night run of our Assumption College Senior Production, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and what a phenomenal journey it has been! The cast and crew left the audience spellbound with their captivating performances, transporting us into the whimsical world of Roald Dahl's classic tale.
Jo Porch, the producer and director, expressed her heartfelt congratulations to all the students and staff involved in the production.
"Congratulations to all students and staff involved in Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Your hard work and perseverance paid off with magical performances over the 3 nights. It was scrumptastic to be back in the theatre again with such a talented group of dedicated students and 3 wonderful nights of appreciative audiences."
We are immensely proud of our performers and the supporting students who worked tirelessly off-stage to bring the production to life. Their talent, courage, and creativity shone through in every scene, and they have left us in awe. The memories created during "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will be cherished for years to come.
Thank you to everyone who made this production possible, from the Director and musicians to the set-builders, costume sewers, make-up artists, and all the staff who generously shared their time and expertise. Your contributions played an integral role in the success of this enchanting production.
Celebrating Reconciliation Week
The Assumption College community came together in a spirit of unity and respect during the week-long celebration of Reconciliation Week. This special occasion provided a meaningful opportunity to pay tribute to Indigenous culture while fostering greater understanding and reconciliation within our school community.
Throughout the week, our students engaged in a range of activities and ceremonies that highlighted the significance of Reconciliation Week.
One of the highlights of the week was the Firsts footy team's match against Marcellin, which took place amidst the vibrant atmosphere of our home crowd. The team displayed exceptional skill and determination, securing an impressive 58-50 victory in the opening game of the Reconciliation Round. Adding a special touch to the occasion, our team proudly donned specially designed Indigenous jersey created by local Aboriginal Elder, Mick Harding.
The significance of Reconciliation Week extended beyond sporting events. It served as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and respecting the traditional custodians of the land on which our school stands. We recognise the importance of creating an inclusive environment that embraces diversity, fosters mutual understanding, and builds stronger connections with Indigenous communities.
Let us carry the spirit of reconciliation forward as we continue to learn, grow, and work towards building a more inclusive and harmonious future. Together, we can make a positive difference and forge stronger relationships within our diverse Assumption College community.
A Night of Talent and Artistry: Celebrating VCE Dance and Music
The Assumption College Theatrette came alive with a beautiful display of talent and artistry at the highly anticipated VCE Dance and Music Night. On Thursday, 1st June, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, our exceptional VCE students took the stage, leaving the audience captivated by their remarkable performances.
The energy in the Theatrette was electric, as the performers transported the audience on a journey of emotions and expressions through their art.
During the interval, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a light supper provided in room 830.
To all who attended and supported the VCE Dance and Music Night, we sincerely appreciate your presence and enthusiasm. Your encouragement and applause provided a tremendous boost to the performers.
As we reflect on this unforgettable evening, we look forward to bringing you more incredible showcases and events in the future. Our students' artistic journeys continue to unfold, and we are excited to witness their growth and creativity.
Stay tuned for updates on upcoming performances and opportunities to celebrate the talents and achievements of our remarkable Assumption College students.
2023 Careers Expo
The highly anticipated Careers Expo held at the Gonz was a resounding success. The event, which took place on Friday, May 26th, 2023, provided an invaluable opportunity for students to explore various career paths and gather important information on the steps towards reaching their goals.
Throughout the day, students and parents engaged with professionals from fields such as the Defence Force, Universities, Cricket Victoria, Victoria Police, and industry experts. Exhibitors showcased their expertise, sharing insights and offering guidance to help students navigate their career choices. The event buzzed with excitement as students seized the chance to ask questions, gain industry knowledge, and gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all the exhibitors, staff, and volunteers who made the Careers Expo possible. Their dedication and commitment played a significant role in creating a dynamic and enriching experience for our students. The event served as a catalyst for empowering those who attended to pursue their passions with confidence and purpose.
Student Achievements - Kirra
We celebrate the remarkable achievements of Kirra Wright, an exceptional athlete. Despite facing an injury, Kirra's resilience and determination were on display at the recent national championships. In the 400m event, she finished 6th, just 2 seconds shy of her Australian record. Kirra secured 7th place in both the 200m and 100m events, delivering outstanding performances. In long jump, she achieved an impressive distance of 3.92m, earning a well-deserved gold medal. Equestrian Report
Jumping and Dressage days were held on the 13th and 14th of May at the Werribee National Equestrian Park.
A team of 5 represented Assumption College at the Show Jumping day on Saturday. Each of the students placed in their perspective classes, resulting in Assumption College being announced as the Reserve Champion School. Team members were: Eliza and Twlight 2nd; Alanni and Lilly of the Valley; Deacon 2nd; Alira and Lethal Flame 6th and Sarah and Manhatten 6th.
A team of 5 also represented Assumption College at the Dressage Day on Sunday. Each of the students rode beautifully. Some rode very challenging tests, it was one pony's first ever outing and others rode at their personal best. The bright sunshine was a welcome respite and captured the sheen of each horse's coat in a magical glow.
Darcy and Parklands Faltango achieved Champion in Preliminary Senior and standing beside him was Tamsyn and Misty Knight as the Reserve Champion combination.

Reunion of Lifelong Friends from Assumption College
Reunions are always a special time, and this one was no exception. Three former students of Assumption College, Peter Ryan, Shane Ryan, and Michael Tyrell, came together to revisit their old school and reminisce on old memories.
The three of them started at Assumption College in 1962 and lived together in a 29-bed dormitory. Peter and Michael were in grade 5 while Shane was in grade 6. They formed a close bond while playing cricket together and remained friends all these years.
Life took them in different directions after leaving Assumption College, but their friendship continued to flourish. Michael married a nurse named Jan in 1974 and Peter married Jan's friend Catherine in 1975. Over the years, both families have been close friends.
Earlier this month, Michael came down to see Ray Carroll and attend Catherine's 70th birthday. The three of them wanted to see how the college has changed and advanced over the years. After a 45-year absence, they were impressed by what they saw, and it was a special moment to see Peter's name on boards and lockers in the Neale Daniher Community and Sports Pavilion.
Reunions like this are a reminder of the lasting impact that our school experiences have on our lives and the special relationships that can form. We are grateful for the memories shared by Peter, Shane, and Michael and for their continued support of Assumption College.
