Marist Schools Australia Newsletter
Principal's Welcome
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to imagine that this first term is coming to a close so quickly as we hurtle towards the Easter break.
It has been a term jam-packed with events including the Welcome Event for New Parents, Year 12 Retreat, Year 7 Camp, NAPLAN, our Summer Sports Program, and we have more yet to come with Open Day, Year 10 City Experience, Summer Sport & Swimming Awards Evening, College Athletics Day, the Marist Basketball Carnival in Queensland, finishing off with our annual Easter Vigil on Thursday 28 March.
Throughout all these events, the students and staff have immersed themselves fully into each of their endeavours displaying an admirable school spirit, always embodying the strong sense of community which we enjoy here at Assumption.
College Open Day Monday 18 March
This Monday sees our annual Open Day being held between 4pm and 7pm on the College grounds. This event provides yet another opportunity for the College to showcase the immense variety of learning experiences that our students enjoy both in and out of the classroom. We have so many students who will be volunteering to lead tours of the College and I thank them not only for their generous spirit, but also for their willingness to share their Assumption story with prospective parents and students who are considering joining our wonderful community.
Mobile Phone Policy
I want to thank you, the families, and the majority of students for their support of the College Mobile Phone Policy.
While some students have had some difficulty adjusting to school life without phones, the majority of students have embraced the policy and its intent of supporting the development of positive relationships in which individuals speak to one another. Another benefit has been the ensuring of less distractions in class as students are more focused on their learning.
That said, there have been some instances where students have needed to leave early and have made phone calls home. Please encourage your sons and daughters to use appropriate communication protocols in supporting this policy.
Attendance
I would like to remind families of the importance of attendance at school. At present our attendance rates are quite strong with Year 7 at 93.28%; Year 8 at 88.68%; Year 9 at 90.61%; Year 10 at 89.16%; Year 11at 91.53%; and Year 12 at 91.42%.
However, we want to aim as closely as possible to 100% attendance. Evidence has shown that success at school is predicated upon being in a class where the learning takes place. As a College, we have processes in place which ensure that optimal conditions are in place to support student attendance, which is a key indicator of wellbeing across the College.
It is in this vein that we ask your support to ensure that your son and/or daughter are at school every day. We ask that you communicate with us should there be concerns about their wellbeing and seek support from us for the betterment of your child. The College has a wonderful wellbeing team and being open in our communications with each other will forge a stronger partnership. To that end, should your son and daughter wish to leave early due to illness or other reasons, please ensure that they observe proper protocols in informing the College before departing on any given day.
Closing Remarks
While I will communicate with you before the end of the term, I want to thank you for your support thus far in Term 1. While it has been an extremely busy one, your support has made the work all the more worthwhile because it is the sense of community which gives hope to all of whom are a part of it. It is this notion of community from which I draw upon our Marist spirituality which “inspires our understanding of how we are to live what Jesus commands us and what Champagnat dreams for us. At the same time, it grows and develops as we love one another, honestly and simply, in our families and communities”.[1]

Year 7 Vaccination Information - Friday April 19
From 6 February 2023, the routine two dose HPV vaccine schedule provided to young people aged 12-13 years through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) has become a single dose schedule using the same Gardasil®9 vaccine.
What is the HPV vaccine?
The Gardasil®9 vaccine protects against HPV infection, which is a common viral infection, usually affecting the genitals and spread through sexual contact. The vaccine is most effective when given before exposure to the virus, that is before a person becomes sexually active. More information about HPV and the HPV vaccine can be found on the Better Health Channel.
How has the HPV vaccine schedule changed?
From 6 February 2023, the recommended HPV vaccine schedule for most people has changed from two-doses to a single dose course using the same Gardasil®9 vaccine. There is no change to the amount of vaccine that is given in the single dose.
The schedule has not changed for immunocompromised people. A 3-dose schedule of HPV vaccine is recommended for people with severely immunocompromising conditions, regardless of their age when they started vaccination.
Why was this change made?
The change is based on advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), who have considered and reviewed the latest international clinical evidence. ATAGI support the large volume of clinical findings that a single dose of HPV vaccine provides about the same protection as two doses of HPV vaccine.
What do you need to do?
Your council immunisation service will seek your consent for vaccinations delivered to students at school as usual.
If you would like to discuss the change or clarify any information about the HPV vaccine please contact your local council.

International Women's Day
On March 8 we celebrated all the wonderful women in our College community and the wider community.
We expressed our gratitude to the women who enrich our lives everyday. From mothers and sisters to teachers and colleagues, your strength, determination, compassion and tireless dedication inspires us all.
We would like to share with you the following reflections and prayer from Caritas Australia to commemorate International Women's Day.
Today we stand with the courageous women who face adversity everyday.
May their strength and determination be celebrated and valued by all.
Today we celebrate the women who are persevering to protect our environment.
May we be inspired by their efforts and have courage to do the same.
Today we recognise those women who advocate for equal rights.
May we all support women ‘to pursue goals without bias or barriers’.
Today we acknowledge women who use their positions of power and influence to make a positive
change within their communities.
May we all use our gifts and talents to create a better world.
Today we thank women around the world who teach one another fundamental skills so their
communities can thrive.
May we learn from their leadership and generosity.
Today we stand in solidarity with those women who look beyond their own needs, working for the
common good of all.
May we come together as one to create a society where everyone feels valued and connected.
God, whose love and goodness gathers us in:
we pray for women all over the world,
especially those challenged by poverty and other injustice.
Stir us to know women’s dignity.
Quieten us to listen to women’s voices.
Awaken us to see women’s realities.
Strengthen us to stand for women’s rights.
Fill us with hope to make a better future together.
Amen.

Bringing learning conversations home
Our Learning Leaders have come together to emphasise the importance of engaging in discussions with your child regarding their daily experiences at school.
What does ‘Bringing Learning Conversations Home’ mean?
Encouraging conversations with your child about school is crucial for their academic success, emotional well-being, and overall development. It helps parents stay connected with their child's educational journey, identify any challenges they may be facing, and provide support when needed.
How can parents foster meaningful conversations about school?
- Create a Positive Environment: Start by creating a positive and supportive atmosphere at home where your child feels comfortable sharing their experiences. Show genuine interest in their day and be an attentive listener.
- Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of simply asking, "How was school today?" try asking more open-ended questions like, "What was the best part of your day?" or "Tell me about something interesting you learned."
- Share Your Own Experiences: Share stories from your own school days or experiences related to what your child is learning. This can make conversations more relatable and engaging for your child.
- Be Patient and Persistent: Some children may be hesitant to talk about school initially. Be patient and persistent in your efforts to initiate conversations. It may take time for them to open up.
- Use Different Communication Channels: Not all children feel comfortable talking face-to-face. Explore alternative communication channels such as writing notes, drawing together, or having conversations during shared activities like cooking or driving.
- Focus on the Positive: Celebrate your child's achievements and successes, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement encourages them to continue sharing their experiences with you.
- Address Concerns Promptly: If your child expresses any concerns or struggles related to school, address them promptly and provide reassurance and support. Let them know that it's okay to ask for help when needed.
- Be Mindful of Timing: Choose the right time to initiate conversations about school. Avoid bringing up sensitive topics right before bedtime or when your child is tired or stressed.
- Involve Them in Decision-Making: Involve your child in decisions related to their education, such as choosing extracurricular activities or planning study schedules. This fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility.
- Stay Engaged with School Activities: Attend parent-teacher conferences, school events, and volunteer opportunities whenever possible. Staying engaged with your child's school community shows them that you value their education and are invested in their success.
Why does bringing conversations about school home matter?
Encouraging conversations about school not only strengthens the parent-child bond but also helps children develop important communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and emotional resilience. By actively engaging with your child about their school experiences, you can support their academic growth and overall well-being.

Social Justice Fundraiser
This term, the season of Lent prepares us for a great Christian celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection as we make a special effort to come closer to God in the lead up to Easter. One way we can fulfil this is through participating in the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal.
The money we donate throughout Lent is a major means of expressing self-sacrifice in our College Community in order to help others, giving special attention to those who are poor, sick, and suffering injustice in the world. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. With your support, Caritas Australia has been able to assist communities around the world through income generation, water and sanitation, food security, education, and disaster risk reduction programs.
This year, Caritas Australia's theme is 'For All Future Generations,' urging us to consider the ripple effects our actions can have on the future. We invite you to give generously by donating through the Project Compassion donation boxes in each Learning Mentor Group, or online by visiting this link.
